This is the first English translation of the 'Chronicle of Prussia' written by Nicolaus von Jeroschin in Middle High German verse during the period from 1330 to 1341. It is a history of the Teutonic Knights encompassing the foundation of the Order in Acre in 1190 and its activities in north-eastern Europe up to 1331. The opening part comprises the introduction the founding of the Order and a discourse on the nature of spiritual and earthly warfare it then recounts the wars of the Teutonic Knights against the Prussians and Lithuanians. The Kr?nike von Pr?zinlant is itself a translation of a Latin chronicle the Chronicon Terre Prussiae of Peter of Dusburg completed around 1330. Both were written at the instigation of the Grand Masters of the Order. The vernacular version by Jeroschin was far more widely disseminated than Dusburg's Latin text. It is a lively and informative document designed to entertain as well as educate and as well as accounts of the wars themselves it gives important insights into the Order's view of its role in Prussia and of crusading warfare.
