Venice was a centre of power widely seen as the dominant political overlord in its area. In this volume Gabriele Neher examines to what extent artists in Brescia and Verona succeeded in establishing a distinctively Brescian or Veronan visual identity. Both towns boasted a distinguished local history and occupied sites of strategic importance. Both exhibit a concern with the fashioning of civic identity. Important differences concern the nature of the government of each town and its relation to Venice.
