Traditional models for studying the architecture of western Europe in this period have not fitted the Dutch experience and, as a result, Dutch architecture has been left out of the picture. Post 1750, the Netherlands experienced an economic boom and a period of scientific, economic, cultural and social reform. The author describes this background for a revival of interest in architecture triggered by the professionalisation of the architect and engineer, and the need for new building types. This tight knitting of the politics of the Republic, with architecture perceived as a valuable instrument of social reform, is unique and produced a lively debate that made a unique contribution to Enlightenment thought. This book re-thinks the Dutch response to neo-classicism.
