An exploration of the nature of sartorial identity in British art and fiction between 1890 and 1920, this study re-evaluates the role of clothing in a society where categories of class and gender were being reformulated. Each interdisciplinary chapter analyses the output of contemporary artists and authors exploring issues such as social anxieties about shops where clothing was sold, social interpretations of the clothed body, undressing and sexual identity, and national identity as expressed through clothing.
