The topic of regional inequality excites a great deal of interest in the United Kingdom today and most people are aware of the existence of a 'North-South divide' and of the underlying phenomenon of income inequalities between the regions of the UK. What is less well known is the position relating to inequality and poverty within the regions themselves. Given the geographical immobility of large sections of the population in the UK, an awareness of the magnitude and nature of such regional problems would obviously be of importance in formulating social policy and in targeting resources. The purpose of this book is to carry out, on a regional basis, an analysis of poverty and inequality in the UK. In so doing the book uses techniques of modern economic analysis to assess the contribution of different population subgroups (and of different types of income) to overall inequality and poverty. As a consequence the book highlights several interesting results that have remained obscured by more aggregate studies.
