This book measures labour productivity in the manufacturing industry of the Czech Republic and Hungary relative to the west and particularly Germany. Comparisons are based on detailed matched sample firm studies. The results are set alongside those of the authors' earlier work including East Germany. The book is an aid to policy-makers and practitioners concerned with economic and business development in the former Communist bloc. Measurements of performance and future prospects for the two countries are considered in the light of their previous macroeconomic performance the educational and training systems and a detailed analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the principal industrial activities (i.e. engineering clothing and textiles food processing furniture and miscellaneous). Consideration of the historical and background data provides the setting for illustration of sample firm productivity and explanatory factors (e.g. machinery and labour force qualifications).
