This interdisciplinary study examines the complicated relations between print and technology the practices of theatre and the process of urban identity formation in the Dutch Republic of the seventeenth century. Focusing on the sex-tinged slapstick images that were directed at Protestant children Angela Vanhaelen here considers the implications of this marketing strategy in light of religious and political struggles over the regulation of farcical theatre performances in Amsterdam. She analyses evidence that indicates that there was much at stake in these seemingly trivial forms as they played a strategic role in larger battles over the control of the city and its populations.
