Many African cities have experienced a simultaneous decline in both living standards and urban services. This book however studies three African capital cities that have seriously concerned themselves with providing an adequate urban environment to their citizens and have largely succeeded. The cities Accra Harare and Gaborone represent three differing approaches to the problems of providing an adequate urban service. This analysis of the difference points out the successes and failures of their policies and their outcomes in the hope of providing lessons for other third world cities that seek to provide adequate urban services to the poor as well as the rich.
