Images in Context: The Appropriation of Indigenous Symbols and Practices in the Catholic Church examines the use of Indigenous and American Indian symbols and practices in contemporary United States reservation Catholic Churches. It explores current contexts and complex areas of conflict and appropriation through the voices of Native and non-Native scholars and Indigenous community members. Through photographs and visual studies interviews and data analysis it situates the discussion of appropriation within the context of Native American religious experience that reflects and constructs lived experience. Given the historical context of missionization colonization and cultural assault against Indigenous communities often presented within a context of ?helping those less fortunate? this area of study is noticeably absent in the literature and important for scholars and students interested in the ways visual culture frames and reframes our lives.
