Nicholas Chesneau was one of the most important printers of polemical and devotional books in sixteenth-century France. Although only active between 1556 and 1584 he published at least 429 editions and was a major factor in the success of the Catholic Reformation at a time when Protestantism was gaining much ground.Providing an outline of Chesneau's career within the wider context of the political religious and economic situation together with a detailed bibliographic listing of all the works he produced this book allows a much fuller understanding of how French Catholicism weathered the challenges of the Protestant Reformers.
