Concentrating on the many documents produced for pageants and processions undertaken by James I this book deals with the urban and rural processions which James embarked upon during his reign and the ways in which they were interpreted by their audiences. William Leahy pays particular attention to contemporary documents which dealt with and commented upon these processions and to their moment of production in cultural and historical terms. Leahy examines the ways in which subsequent analysis has theorised the nature of Jacobean processions investigating the tradition of both civic and royal processions as well as the ideological effect of these cultural expressions.Traditionally analysis has found the ideological goals of these rituals to have been successfully achieved and their targeted audience appropriately instructed. Leahy's research shows that this was not necessarily the case and that the responses of the audience and indeed the pageant texts themselves are characterised by ambiguity.
