This book examines the evolution of corporate governance and personal capitalism based on a set of case studies of British manufacturing companies in the first half of the twentieth century. The introductory chapter sets out the main themes of the book the first section explores contemporary issues concerning corporate governance and corporate behaviour and the main section deals with methodology in particular a critical examination of the notion of personal capitalism and the role of financial reporting. The final section outlines the rationale for a historical case study approach based on a range of firm sizes which displayed differences in the evolution of their governance patterns.
