The traditional site of the tomb of the Prophet Samuel has come to be known as Mons Gaudii or Montjoie as it was there that in June 1099 the First Crusaders had their first glimpse of Jerusalem. The present collection of 18 articles honours Hans Eberhard Mayer a leading crusade historian one of whose early discoveries has been the charter by which King Baldwin V of Jerusalem confirmed the possessions of St Samuel of Montjoie.
