This volume is the first publication to draw upon the mass of information provided by the Historic Towns Atlases in order to explore comparative questions in medieval urban history. Divided in to five sections Part 1 consists of four essays addressing the wider question of comparative urban studies. Parts 2 and 3 concentrate on the processes that determined the morphological formation of towns. Part 4 explores the symbolic meaning of large-scale town plans in their cultural context a topic which is addressed through a number of regional examples. The final section concludes the collection with reflections of Rheinland-Pfalz a highly regarded German medieval scholar who has produced many historic maps. In total the volume offers a fascinating insight into the early development of European towns and cities.
