This collection of essays attempts two things. The first is to make better known the wealth of the Egyptian material especially papyrological for the study of multilingualism in historical societies. One of the greatest contributions of papyri to this subject is that they capture more linguistic registers than other ancient and medieval sources since they can range from very private documents not meant by their author to be read by future generations to official documents coming from the administration which are preserved in the form in which they were actually written. The second is to give a diachronic view of multilingualism in Egypt a country that over roughly a millennium and a half passed from mono- to bi- to tri-lingualism before becoming monolingual again.
