Caroline Bowles Southey is an important nineteenth-century writer whose work deserves to be better known. Initially famous for her prose sketches Chapters on Churchyards it is her poetry which best illustrates her outstanding gifts. It ranges from romantic epic to comic burlesque and from dramatic social protest to the meditative personal lyric with her major achievement being her blank verse autobiography The Birth-day (1836).
