Located at the intersection of psychoanalysis and postcolonialism in the metaphor of the nation-as-family, Regenerative Fictions looks at the ways in which these theoretical approaches, when brought together, may enable a rethinking of contemporary subjectivity and national identity. Schultheis probes the limits of psychoanalysis in postcolonial contexts in order to argue for the possibility of thinking of resistance as immanent to these social fields. Through close literary analyzes of work by Jamaica Kincaid, Bharati Mukherjee, Darryl Pinckney and Salman Rushdie, Schultheis shows how the complex relationship between each novel's aesthetic and political strategies reveals the workings of the dominant ideology and makes possible the imagination of alternatives to it.
