The purpose of this book is to explore a number of themes which focus on the formation of ethnic minority communities of non-European origin in contemporary Britain. In order to advance this aim, the author examines British imperial, colonial and postcolonial relations which stimulated movement of the people of South Asian origin to the outposts of the Empire and subsequently to Britain. Using a theoretical perspective that links causes of migration to the formation of South Asian communities in Bristol, this volume will focus on the urban processes of group formation which combine both the ethics of traditional communities and the spirit of voluntary associations. The author demonstrates that individuals from minority backgrounds, while reproducing their culture, far from being cocooned in it, are responding to British society. Their adaptation as well as their desire to affirm recognition of their transnational identification creates significant conditions for their participation in the local civil society as citizens.
