Taking an interdisciplinary apporach, this book argues for the significance of popular representations of family, gender and organizations. The authors draw on a variety of cultural texts from the UK, USA and Australia , including dramas about the legal and medical professions (eg. Boston Legal), policing (eg. CSI) and small familiy businesses (eg. Six Feet Under). They examine the relationship between the hegemonic structures of the public workplace and the traditional patriarchal sturctures and relations of the domestic family, looking at the way in which the former is presented to the latter in popular television drama. The argue that the familiarity of the family-like structures of the workplace makes these dramas especially resonant to family viewers.
