Social provision has come under scrutiny in all European countries during the 1990s. Thus far very little attention has been paid to the gendered aspects of welfare state restructuring. Most comparative research on welfare states has focused on cash benefits, particularly on social insurance. But it has long been known that women are especially reliant on the provision of good public services. Each contributor examines the way in which the welfare state of his or her country has been restructured over the past decade, concentrating on services for elderly people and for children.
