Davis examines the processes by which an all-inclusive Brazilian national identity was forged in the first four decades of the twentieth century. Specific emphasis is given to the rising patriotic feelings under the administration of President Getulio Vargas, when nationalists encouraged Brazilians to identify with ?«the nation?» above other radical, ethnic or regional communities and created national myths and symbols which marginalized racial consciousness for the rest of the century.
