This book is based on research that sets out to give a thorough analysis of the complex predicament facing the young unemployed. It offers a less descriptive and deterministic picture than traditional models of the effects of unemployment. The forces that push unemployed young people from dissatisfaction to depression are analyzed. Ameliorating factors are also examined, as is the element of conscious strategy adopted in order to survive. These factors are not experienced in isolation but form complex webs. This interrelationship of variables is a central focus.
