This book presents an economic analysis of medical diagnosis and considers the effect of the introduction of a new medical diagnostic technology. The empirical analysis relates to the ?new? diagnostic technology of fibre optic endoscopy which can be used to diagnose diseases/conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. The book also uses the distinction between product and processes innovations and it is argued that process innovations are, of their very nature, substitutes. Thus estimation of cross-price elasticities of demand can be used to determine substitution of the ?new? technology for the ?old? technology of barium meal radiology. Thus it is concluded that the ?new? technology has increased medical expenditures associated with diagnosing diseases and conditions of the gastrointestinal tract.
