Care planning is an extensively applied technique in residential care for older people. This research indicates that it often is instrumental rather than enabling in its purpose. Routines and regimes may be re-enforced by a technique which has been translated from empowerment of service users to disabling practice. A vision of an alternative way of working to this scenario is created.
