The two volume work profiles the nations of Eastern Europe, taking into account the breakup of the former federations of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. We consider, in the new situation, what it is that underpins each nation state from Poland in the north, to Albania, Bulgaria and Macedonia in the south. We present an authentic eastern perspective on the concept of the nation state. Essays on the individual states are not intended to stand as comprehensive historical discourses, rather they offer a concise evaluation of the territorial base and the critical events that have been significant for the development of national identity and the creation of the state. In other words, we consider territory and trajectory: the sequence of events and experiences projected by the territorial base as a dynamic historical perspective.
