The end of the Cold War has focussed attention upon the changing nature of security within the European context. It is a subject area requiring attention now more than ever given the increasingly volatile and unpredictable nature of events. Consequently this introductory text elaborates not only the changing military balance within Europe but also examines the broadening of the concept of security to encompass such issues as societal and environmental security. Divided into five chapters, this text firstly establishes the historical context of European security since 1945. It then analyzes post-Cold War security issues within Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe and ?the wider Europe? and thirdly, tackles various pan-European security issues. Incorporated within the text are suggestions for further reading whilst its appendices contain extracts from key post-Cold War documentation.
