Illustrated by an in-depth study of Samoan small-holder cattle farmers, this volume examines the wider development process and challenges current theories and practices. It views development as a process of interaction and negotiation between two cultures: on the one hand, a vibrant, active Pacific Island culture and on the other the development project subculture. It analyzes the origins and implications of the misinterpretations between the two sides, as conventional models of development clash with the traditional culture and ways of life of the indigenous people.
