"Venice was a centre of power widely seen as the dominant political overlord in its area. In this volume Gabriele Neher examines to what extent artists in Brescia and Verona succeeded in establishing a distinctively Brescian or Veronan visual identity. Both towns boasted a distinguished local history and occupied sites of strategic importance. Both exhibit a concern with the fashioning of civic identity. Important differences concern the nature of the government of each town and its relation to Venice. Recent research has focused on Venice, the fashioning of its identity and the importance of its relations with its territories in its construction. This book pursues and expands these ideas by examining them from the point of view of two key towns in those territories. The book will make an important and original contribution to the cultural history of the Italian Renaissance and to the deeper understanding of the art of Venice."
