In the second half of 1994 the rival paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland declared cease-fires, opening up the prospect of cessation of regular political violence there for the first time a quarter of a century. Terrorism?s Laboratory through a connected series of independently authored essays examines the roots of the violence, its impact upon various groups including women, the responses of various people and even of the paramilitaries themselves to the crisis. By these means two objects are accomplished ? some clues as to the potential durability and problems inherent in the peace process are outlines and Northern Ireland can be placed in the wider context of ethnic terrorism in Europe and elsewhere. The contributors are from several academic disciplines, with varied personal backgrounds and work in a number of different countries thus offering a diversity of approaches and perspectives. These studies throw fresh light on important questions and provide important new insights to our understanding of political terrorism.
